Cougar Sighting at Wareabouts
On
Friday of the May long weekend the dogs were getting pretty
excited about something behind the house. When we went to
take a look, Peter saw a cougar. After it ran off we
investigated and found a deer carcass under a spruce tree
not far from the house.
The cat had
partially covered it with leaves and duff which is typical
cougar behaviour. This is what it was probably doing when
the dogs disturbed it.
We set up the game camera and left making sure the dogs and
cats were in the house. That evening the BIG cat came back
and checked out the camera (see the portion of his face on
the left) but then the batteries died.
Not knowing that the
batteries had failed we did not check the camera until
Sunday morning. A recharge of the batteries and the camera
was back up Sunday evening even though most of the deer had
been eaten. The cat came back.
We've seen cougars
here before but this is the first time we've been able to
get a picture.
Wareabouts, southwest of Millarville, is in the middle of
cougar country. We take precautions but this is their
territory and we're here only in sufferance.
